Old Favourites: Slipknot – “Before I Forget”

“Claustrophobic, closing in, and I’m catastrophic, not again…”

Is this going to damage my almighty cool kid cred? Whatever, zero fucks given. Let’s talk about Slipknot. This is a band that ruled my life for the better part of half a decade – I was obsessed with their sound, their imagery, their lyrics, the works. Their angst-ridden, hopeless-despair anthems obviously don’t resonate with me like they used to, but when it comes down to it I’d still call myself a Slipknot fan. Anyway, let’s get right back into the peak of my obsession, which came circa their third – and best – album, Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses, and the release of this video.

The clip for Before I Forget is an excercise in great editing. The premise is a performance video with a twist – all nine members of Slipknot are unmasked and performing in a plain white room, except a direct shot of any of their faces are never shown. This was huge for me at the time – as soon as I heard that the band would be performing in the clip without their famous masks, I was immediately intrigued. Before I ForgetĀ is still a fascinating video to watch in order to note just how cleverly their faces were avoided. It allows one to appreciate the performance away from facial expression and watch how the band connects together. Of course, there’s a couple of shots of a few band members not doing very much at all – but that’s kind of the point, in a way. There’s no shock value here, there’s no faux-horror subplot. It’s just the band, plain as can be – minus their faces, of course. Even when they’re going back to basics, there’s still a way to deviate from the norm. Don’t be too cool to appreciate that.
